audio cassetes are analog - they information is recorded on tiny magnetic particles on the tape.
mp3 cds are digital - the data is stored in tiny dots burned into the reflective layer with a lazer.

MP3 is a sound signal compression system wich is based on psychoacoustic fx.That means it uses an algorithm to reject sound information that the ear hears (mostly) but not the brain.
