First of all, you can't blame a religion for the increase of AIDS. Everyone has the power of free will and therefore, have always, and will always, have the power to decide whether or not they are sexually active and whether they wish to use contraception.
It is the lack of understanding of the AIDS virus that has truly spread the disease.

Secondly, Look at the parts of the world most affected by AIDS. The majority of these places are over populated with high rates unemployment and poor educational standards across the board. How can you expect people to understand the extent of the problem and take steps prevent the spreading of the disease, when they are not educated on the subject?

To give an example of the danger this ignorance and lack of understanding can bring.. In south Africa were AIDS is reaching epidemic proportions, in the villages and settlements, it is folklore that if a man suffering from the AIDS virus has sexual intercourse with a virgin, it will cure him of this disease.
That to me aptly sums up the true extent of this problem.
Knowledge is power- educate people and give them the chance to control and prevent this disease from flourishing any further.

The Catholic church is promoting abstinence as the best method for controlling the spread of AIDS in Africa and the developing world. Condoms are not 100% failsafe esp for homosexual sex and thus by pushing them as a 100% safe method it is creating a false sense of security. Any condom packet will tell you that they are not 100% preventative for birth control let alone AIDS prevention which is why most people use the contraceptive pill and condoms.

To those who say the innocent do sleep around, what about rape victims or wives whose husbands have contracted AIDS due to sleping around. I think everyone should be allowed to use condoms. My religion and faith is one thing but my health is important too.

By the way I am not a Catholic!

You cannot blame aids on the catholic church, its unfair. Catholicism encourage ppl not to use condom as well as not to have sex prior to marriage, and to then sleep with that one partner. I agree that in this day and age this is not happening and many may view this method as impracticable, my point is u cannot blame the catholic church for AIDS spread. You cannot listen to only part of it's teaching and then blame it. If one does listen to what the church says then innocent ppl won't catch aids.

The Church teaches Abstinence, the perfect birth and AIDS control. Not using condoms is a foolish idea if you choose to have sex out side of marriage. 3% of all condoms fail, the pill has a higher failure rate and does not protect you from STD's. Why destroy your life for 5 min. if that, of so called fun.

As some have already stated...

If you are sleeping around with people you truly don't know all that well, then you living in sin. This means, that you are not totally innocent.

Sex is to be left between a man and a woman in the safety of marriage. When this is done, it can be a beautifully and blessed event! However, we have taken something that God meant for good and have pretty much drug it through the mud, dirt, & grime of our sinfull worl.d

thank god i don't know the exact number.

but it for sure is much.

and i sure as hell don't understand why nobody ever charged the pope with this crime.

edit:
reading the answers below me, it again scares the crap out of me how little some christians try to emphasize with other parts of the world, like the poor parts of Africa, where school-systems don't exist, where education is low, and where a lot of people get Aids because they are not even aware of what causes it, they only hear that the Pope tells them that the use of a condom is forbidden.

the probable answer to this question is: either very few, or none at all.

you contract aids only by having sex with an hiv positive person. you can give yourself some protection by restricting yourself to 'safe sex', but the key to not getting aids is really not having an infected partner.

if a catholic is having sex with someone that they are not married to they are already committing the very serious sin of fornication.

do you honestly believe that someone who is comfortable with the idea of committing one very serious sin is going to listen to the church when it warns her not to commit a much less serious sin (by using a condom)?

Too many. But innocents.?.. you have a choice unless it is forced upon you, in or out of religion. The innocents are the ones without the choice.

this is a good question. some Protestant groups are kinda funny about using condoms too. Most of Africa is a good example of what christians have done to destroy lives. Fire dawg thats a very rude and sick statement. but i whould expect Ignorant statements from a christian.
