counselling is more or less like an intensive educational acivity which is mostly done in between 2 person in a confined place....Its aim is to educate the other person after hearing them...

Onthe other hand, phschotherapy involves a intervention intented to cure some ailment which could be either by listening or medication & listening both.there is a term of contract which binds doctor-patient but nothing of this sort exist in counselling...

also in counselling the counseller provides the counselle all different options..after which the person chooses the best option for him/her self but in phychotherpy no options are given.

Actually, there isn't necessarily ANY difference.
Good psychotherapists and good counsellors will generally both have a masters degree or PhD in psychology .

It's really only a name, although a lot of people consider 'counselling' to be a more person-oriented activity while psychotherapy is sometimes considered to be something that may take place over a longer period on time.

In reality, they are the same thing.
In both situations, be careful that you see someone with a decent education in psychology (not some dodgy diploma from a technical college, or a social work degree).

Counselling is a more discussion based approach, where the client talks about whats on their mind, and the counsellor offers a neutral minded constructive opinion/advice.

A psychotherapist analyses the psychological factors causing a problem, and is likely to engage in treating the person through different psychological means such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

A good counsellor is likely to have a psychology degree, and is capable of drawing a blur between counselling and psychology. However, you don't need a psychology degree to be a counsellor - and not all counsellors have a psychology background.

In counselling, the client proposes the topic to be considered and gets info. In psychotherapy, the therapist decides on what to do for psychological treatment.

Hardly any difference, but the similarities are that they are both 'rip off' merchants!
