I don't know, I'm as baffled as you are. I can only guess that it is because they are told that the bible is the ultimate truth, and that everything in it is true. Unfortunately it is far from that, and has been misleading mankind for 2000 years. It's all down to power by the church, and them having control over their flock. It's no coincidence that they are called a flock, as they all behave like mindless sheep. I think it must be that most christians are either (a) intellectually challenged or (b) have some sort of genetic disorder that makes them want to be ordered around and told what to think without having to go to the trouble themselves.

Because it undermines everything in the bible and hence the faith that people cling to in order to fill the huge holes in their lives.
What people forget is that although evolution is still a theory - in other words we cant explain it 100% it is the best thing that we have got by some way and has stood a long test of time and is based on testable evidence and used daily by scientists all over teh world in many discisplies from mediceine to genetics, zoology and biology - often aiding new research, discoveries and practical applications such as gene therapy and new medicine.
In contrast you could just believe the bible taht says God created Adam & Eve.......

Because they cannot understand how science and religion can work together.
See, they know beyond a shadow of doubt that God's Word is true. Therefore, since the Word says the earth was created in 6 days, it was. In their minds, that leaves no room for evolution, the earth can only be 8000 old or so, end of story.
Yet I purpose that there is a period of time within the Bible, between chapters 1 and 2, that could have been any length of time, including millions of years. After all, Adam and Eve were created in God's image, and part of that image is "God is eternal".

As a geneticist, i have given this some thought. Although the theory of evolution is a theory (the clue is in the title), the biblical path must be taken as gospel and there is no margin for adaptation. Although evolution may not have all the answers, like most theoretical science it can be changed and updated as and when new evidence comes to light. What seems more likely; the chance that science is partially correct through centuries of research and may one day be able to explain exactly where we came from and how, or that an explanation based on pure faith alone with no evidence whatsoever is exactly correct and can not be questioned.
In reference to a lack of evidence for evolution; i think maybe further research on your part may reveal that the evidence against it is massively insignificant when compared to the evidence for it.
One extra note regarding previous post about evolution of the eye: there are many examples throughout history of evloutionary "jumps" such as these and although they may seem incredulous at first, my faith lies in science being able to find the answer as opposed to not looking for one.

hmm, facts
Let me start by saying that I think the theory of evolution seems reasonable, but is it better than the God theory, well...
When I was younger I rejected the God stuff out of hand and plumped for science. Scientists conduct experiments, logical chains of thoughts, etc..., much better than this belief stuff.
However, science, or rather the acceptance by the general populous is largely a question of belief. Hah, i hear you mock... but consider a clever person comes up with a theory, they conduct some experiments, and then say here is proof. Some other clever people examine the theory and the experiments and say yes they are right. Everyone else accepts the proof, most do so without ever seeing it, i for one have not read darwins theory first hand, only got it through school, tv, "the media"
Therefore, it is just what you say a belief....
Is my belief better than yours. Is mine truer than yours...
Therefore, I find it very understandable that there are people who do not believe what I do...
You may even be one of them....

People who don't believethe fact of evolution, to me they're like a sheep lost in the wilderness but wants not to return home.
It's not that they are so sure of the untruethwathy of evolution, but they fear challenges and conflicts in their understanding. They think when they give some time to think about it, it will be like standing between doubts, which God doesn't like and hence they will be on the devil's side.
Eventhough there are many theories of evolution some of which may not be that true, the fact is things have evolved from generations and to me as a believer in God as well as a believer in evolution, I say evolution has been there and it will stay there, but all has been God's plan for things to work out that way.

Everyone misses the point on this one,
Darwin was not born when they first started to compile the Bible,
So, to simplify the beginning for the uneducated masses the Adam and Eve story was made up this does not in any way demean the Bibles further teachings which still has meaning no matter what you believe.

You come on and show us the facts. Evolution never happened because it is based on the assumption that very SLOW genetic changes that occur over very LONG periods of time. I did a study and proved that super computer so FAST (trillion calculation per second) will not be able to encode correctly the genetic code of one important human protein (albumin) even after trillion of trillion of years, now if you know the age of earth is just 4.5 billion year only, then the first assumption is wrong.

Since evolution is a fact (and not a religious doctrine), there is nothing to believe in. It is and always will be.
The fact that there are millions of people who chose to close their eyes and minds to reality and instead believe in a variety of (man-made) religious doctrines, stories and fairytales that make no sense whatsoever to any person with a working brain is sad, unfortunate and will harm all of us a great deal.

the facts are not all there. Many people have been worshipping for many years to get them through the years off suffering imposed on them. for example: The English and the Irish. slaves etc. this gave them hope and it just continued and grew stronger over the ages. This is why people have believed in Gods all the way back from anceint times.
