It is a practise to recite adhan "Call for Prayer" in the babies right ear and Ikkamath in the left ear by the father.

Shaving the babies head and giving silver to needy for the wieght of the hair is another sunnah

Naming the baby a good name with a good meaning is a MUST

You also should give Akeekah "Sacrifice a goat" for the protection and well bieng of the child

In Islaam, there are clear guidlines for a pregnent woman as well as naming a new born baby. A pregnent woman should practice Islam as much as they can and also read about Mohammed (PBUH) life. Read the Quran, study the sunna and think about her husband's good qualities. When a baby is born usually his father must say 'Allah is great' in his/her ears. Do a Akika and give the child a nice Islamic name which has a good meaning.

When giving birth, the father is encouraged to be there, although he does not have to. My own husband was there with our second child whose gender we did not know. He cut the cord too, although it was a planned section. He whispered the Shahada in our son's ear after he got over the fact that we now had a girl and a boy. He then fed him the sucrose water (sweetened his mouth) and prayed for him. It's about a father bonding with his child, basically. Two goats are supposed to be sacrificed, 2/3 of which go to the poor who can not afford to buy meat. Then the baby's head is shaved and the weight of the hair is given to the poor in gold or silver. Basically, it's all about helping those in need. For naming, the child should have a good strong name. Not a sexual name, not a fantasy name, but a strong one. The best are those that are the prophet's names, such as David, Daniel, Joseph. In Arabic, they would be Dawud, Danyal, Yusuf. My daughter is named Sarah, by my father in law, and it means princess as well as the wife of prophet Abraham. My son is named Shahzaib and its meaning is "Son of a King" named by my husband (go figure, eyes rolling). It's a good meaning, but I would have preferred Danyal. My husband begged me to let him name him this, and because I could see how badly he wanted it and I love him, I gave in.

Hakikah is the best thing to do, because it is sunnah.
