Once he gets loose out of the house he just keeps on running and it takes a while to lure him back. Any training tips. I don't want to take him to dog school if possible.

He is a golden retriever and it's in his nature to run. He needs to burn off the energy that builds in him. His nature is to run out and get something and bring it back to his master.

At a local park with a lake there is a man with a Golden and a black lab. He has an object he throws into the water for the lab to retrieve. He then fire a tennis ball about 200 ft away for the Golden to retrieve. I thought it was a kids toy he was using, but he said he bought it at an online site for pets. He uses this method for an hour every day to burn off the dogs energy.

You can also burn off the dogs energy by taking him on daily walks. A dog his size will require about a 3 mile walk to burn off enough of the energy. As you walk him do not let him run out on the leash. Keep the leash short so he is walking on one side and slightly behind you. Make sure his head does not go forward of your leg. As the dog walks do not let his head go down like he's sniffing the ground. Keeping his head up forces him to focus on you. You are his master and pack leader. In a wild pack he would have to focus on the Alpha (pack leader). The pack leader will actually punish a lower ranking dog for not focusing on him when on the prowl. Usually a little nip around his snout will get his attention and reinforce the message to focus on the leader. When you stop to let him sniff around and do his potty then you can let him have the leash length. When the walk resumes have him assume the previous position.

When the walk first starts he will probably resist the walking position. He will get used to it in a short distance and actually enjoy and be happy in that position. Most dogs are not meant to be pack leaders and are happier being a lower ranking member. He will then know and understand what his position in the pack is and be much happier that you are the leader and have to make all the decisions.

As you walk the dog try not to use his name when you want him to respond to your command. For instance, his head is down and he resists when you tug the leash to bring it back up. Instead of saying his name and talking to him make a sound like a hiss or other sound he will recognize as you being displeased with him. Also make a hand gesture like pointing your finger at him. He will know you are displeased by the sound and the finger point will tell him it is he you are displeased with. Dogs in a pack do not have names. They use sounds and body language to communicate with each other. Saying his name and talking means little to nothing to him. Sheep hearders that use dogs to do the hearding use whistles and other sounds to command the dogs. You can also use sounds to train you dog to stop if he starts to run off. Yelling his name and telling him to come back or stop does no good. When trained to a displeased sound he will stop or return as soon as he hears it, knowing your displeased with his actions. Remember, dogs always want to please their masters. Always! Training a dog isn't hard, it just takes repitition and commands (sounds) he can understand.

When you put the collar on for a walk, make sure it is as high on his neck as possible. As close to his head as you can get it. The collar low on the neck doesn't get his attention due to the muscle in that area doesn't cause head movement. When high on the neck a little tug or pop will get his attention because it will make his head move.

Although he is a family member, he is not your child. He is a dog and need to live a dogs life. If you do not become the pack leader, he is forced into a role he doesn't want and isn't capable of handling. If you think it ok to let him be the leader of your pack, then let him pay the bills and buy the groceries.

Easy. Teach him recall with a whistle. The best type are Acme 2101/2 Be consistant and use treats such as hot dogs cut into pieces when he comes back. Start training in your back yard first then progress to more distracting places.
DON'T EVER SHOUT AT HIM WHEN YOU GET HIM BACK even if it has taken ages and/or it is raining or you are in a hurry. If you do he will NEVER want to come back to you.

There are these things, great inventions, they're called leashes. It's your responsibility as a dog owner to be in control of YOUR dog at all times. If it runs out in the street and gets hit by a car, it YOUR fault. And you could be sued for the damage to the car. Evidently, you're not responsible enough to own a dog!

They love to run, I have one....... They need lots of excercise and running time, keeping these dogs cooped up in the house makes them very hyper and they do want to run when they get free. Walk him on a leash, put a fence tall enough to keep him in and let him run til he wants back in. These dogs LOVE to run and play.
