Emo - if you mean the music is a shortening of the word 'Emotional' - it is style of punk rock that originated in the US in the early 80's - I guess Emotional Punk. The early contributors to the style were characterised by Singing and, I suppose, playing in a way that expressed emotional meaning rather than conveyed a literal or metaphoric meaning. The term mainly fell out of popular use in the late 80's and 90's but is now seeing a resurgence to describe Nu-Emo bands. My feeling is that while they are Emo they are a bit more melodic and perhaps accessible. Early Emo was very much a cult movement.

'Emo' literally means 'emotional'. Its mostly used to describe the trendy new music which is basically some kid whining about something sounding depressed or like he's going to seriously break out crying and balling mid-song. It is often associated with tight t-shirts, thick rim box frame glasses, and homosexually styled chin length hair(note:emo guys look the same as emo girls). I hope this answers your question.

Emo: Both used to refer to people who are too emotional (usually referring to depressive ones) and a certain style of dress and music. Though as with all stereotypes, people cannot all agree on what certain things are, but generally it's depressing music and black hair dye with medium long hair.
