Crocodiles have a reflex that causes their eyes to tear when they open their mouths. This makes it look as though they are crying while devouring their prey. In fact, neither crocodiles nor people who shed “crocodile” tears feel sorry for their actions.

this explain a little bit, i found this in a editorial on slurs
Of course, I should practice what I preach: A couple of weeks ago, I used the term "crocodile tears" to describe those that flowed with the death of my black Lab, Reilly Mac. Common usage in the part of Ohio from which I hail considered such tears not only "large" but "voluminous."
Of course, most people around these parts, along with every dictionary there is, note "crocodile tears" are those of "false or affected tears" or "hypocritical sorrow," a la Bill Clinton at Ron Brown's funeral. Egads. My use of a word in a parochial fashion certainly had to set up a confusing dichotomy of emotions for readers
hope that helped

Wally Gator has cried a river of tears since he was fired by Hanna-Barbera in the 60's. Oh, yeah, the bring him back occasionally in theme parks and tribute shows, but that's only to keep his trademark from expiring. Those ANIMALS!
