Things are not always as they appear to be. It is a marketing tool. Many times you will pass by a store and see lots of cars parked outside, and through the windows you can see lots of people shopping in the store. You would assume the store must have something good or have some kind of sale going on for the store to be that crowded. But wait! If you tried to get in, you'd find the doors locked and all the people inside were not really shoppers.

Have you ever gone by a small deli and seen the parking area full of cars? Same thing. We like to go to stores that a lot of other people like, and if there are a lot of cars outside we assume it has to be good otherwise all the people would be somewhere else.

What you don't realize is that all these people are not shoppers at all. They are actors, hired to mill about and make the store look busy. Many times the cars are rented from a car rental place and parked outside to give the impression of a busy store. The other day I went to a Friendlys restaurant and saw quite a few cars in the parking lot. However, once I got inside there were only a couple of people. So what were all the cars? Decoys.

Sometimes this is done to better "cook the books". If you need it to look like your income is a lot more than it is you have to dress up the store with fake shoppers so your friendly accountant can add three or four zeroes to your bottom line.

Why would you do this? If you are a small store and want to be a business loan, you may want to create the impression that a lot of people shop in your store. So, on the day the person who is taking your loan application is scheduled to come, you hire a crowd to pretend to shop and fill the parking lot with decoy cars. Most of the merchandise on the shelves is just empty boxes, but they put locks on the doors to create a sense of realism. The PA system in the store that is constantly barking out things like "Pharmacy, you have a call on like three" is all phoney. There is no line three. The whole thing is a set-up, lock, stock and barrel. It doesn't really exist, except as fraudulent entries on an SBA loan application.

Twisted logic rules the world.

The locks are there for those times when they have to close up shop and do inventories of their stock or when they have to renovate and other circumstances like those.
