I am trying to buy a new hoover and I was wondering what is important, is it the name or the number of watts or something else.

the higher the wattage the better the suction power. My wife told me tell you that vax have a good one at mo that cleans carpets as well for about 160 quid!

First...It's not a Hoover ...It's a Vacum Cleaner, Hoover is a brand name.
You wanna go for a good brand name such as Dyson or VAX and look for a high wattage motor {1300}, be prepared to pay at least £150.
Decide if you want an upright or a cylynder and make sure it comes complete with tools, bags, filters and a decent guarantee. The benefit of a good brand name is that if and when it breaks down the company have a reputation to uphold...so they wont mess you around.

Assuming the suction power is the same between several hoovers, check to see if the disposable bag inside is easily available in the store near you. Otherwise, you can get one with a reusable bag.

power! Your hoover has to be powerful. The wattage usually tells you how powerfull a hoover is. Get the best! Miller is the best hoover brand I have found.

A long cable, detatchable head and the ability to use on stairs (if you actually have any) Also, depending on your floors, the ability to swap easily from carpet brush to hard floor brush. I would also advise using a brand that either has no hoover bags, or one that is common enough to be able to easily find them in the shops.

Higher the wattage, higher the suction, higher the dust emitted back in to the room you are hoovering, unless you have good filtration, try Dyson.

I really like my Electrolux ZX1300-213
1. Bagless - easy to clean, washable plastic canister
2. Powerful 1300 Watts
3. HEPA final filter is one of 3 levels of filtering. No dust comes out when you start it up.
4. Air driven carpet tool.

I tried to find it online, but no luck. Maybe it is too old now. I did not like some of the other Electrolux models for various reasons. I hope they still have one like this for you.
The link is to Electrolux vacs.

How good it sucks & how much it can hold. I'm sure it is in wattage though.

Avoid a Dyson - they have come bottom in a survey on usage but top in the table of how many times they break down.
