Cones register fine detail in bright light. Rods in the eye are sensitive to light and are useful for black and white vision. Dogs also have a light reflecting layer called the tapetum lucidum at the back of their eyes, which acts as an image-intensifying device allowing them to utilize what little bit of illumination is available. Dog eyes that are in the process of adapting to seeing in dim light go through a few modifications. Finger-like projections of the tapetum move forward. They line the inner surface of the choroid to form a reflective layer behind the retina. The light passes through the retina in the dark-adapted eye, instead of being absorbed. The choroid reflects straight back through the retina by the tapetum twice and has a greater chance of activating the light sensitive rods. In the dog, the tapetum is usually green or yellowish green. Hence the weird dog eyes that greet you when you are shining a flashlight in the middle of a power outage. Cats have this same advantage. Wild dogs tend to become active at dusk. That is the reason why nature allowed this adaptation to occur. Human vision has a higher cone and rod ratio and accounts for us having better color vision than dogs do. The evidence does point to the fact that dogs do perceive some colors.
Until one can talk we will never be sure if cats see ghosts, will we?

how on earth can anyone ever actually prove what cats or dogs really do see, if you think about it even humans could see things totally different than one another, i could see a square as a circle and never know the difference. it sometimes freaks me out, but i dont think its true, its like how they say we dream in black and white , and i know i dream in color, and yes i think cats see ghosts cause cats do weird things and play pretty wierd sometimes. my cat has actually scared me really bad one day, i know she seen something that i didnt. i had to leave the house cause i was scared id see it.

yes it is true cats can see ghosts...... and so can dogs. Animals are very psychic and know where there is someone or something around when the human doesn't. Dogs are color blind. cats see SOME colors. but they both are very psychic watch your cat or dog sometime. when you see them just starring into a empty spot or even meow or bark outta the blue..

no it isn't. Dogs are red-green color blind. They see a brighter and less detailed world when compared to humans. Peripheral vision is better than humans (dogs see more of the world), but distance is not judged quite as well. Dogs excel at night vision and the detection of moving objects.
