The reasons why people fall in love are varied. Some talked about chemical attraction (pheromones), and apparently it plays a great part in it. Of course, there's also the physical attraction, and that's more linked to what people called "lust".
I take it that you can make the distinction between going out with someone, and loving someone. Also, I'm only going to consider that the two persons involved are not commitment phobics.
When people fall in love, they unconsciously tend to notice only the good things about their partner. Also, they tend to do more things for their partner. So that when the passion goes away and you get into a routine, you notice all the "shortcomings" of the other. Sometimes, it works out, but sometimes, you realise that you'll never be able to live with this person.
Even if you don't mind the other's shortcomings, routine can be difficult to avoid. It can be difficult to keep love alive when you share everything with someone. Also, in a relationship, you are bound to compromise at some point - if you want to stay with that person, that is.
There's a book called "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" (it's a best-seller) and, although he could have summed up his ideas in 15 pages, I think it's a good book to read to understand how men and women think. Sometimes, you really want your relationship to work, but you don't know how to do it because you don't understand the other. Communication is VERY important in a relationship, but even if you try to communicate, you might be doing it the wrong way. I'm not saying this book has THE answer (everybody's different), but I think it's a good way to understand why couples fight for apparently no reason.
I think that before people get married, they should go out for a while, then live together for a while, and see if they can handle their problems.
PS: of course, sometimes, love just fades away.

Love is our natural state and when we 'fall in love' with another we are experiencing our true nature. But the ego, which is made up of fearful survial based emotions, only wants to destroy love. The only way around this problem is to develop beyond our fear and unconsciousness. Until we're firmly grounded in our own loving nature, our own saboteur (ego) and our beloved's will likely destroy the relationship. It helps to have the shared intention to grow and develop together, but the walls around unenlightened hearts can be a b%#ch to get past. It's possible, but highly unlikely.

I do not think that the fall in love so easily. I beleive it is lust they fall in to. That is why it is so easy to break up and that should answer your question to why we would not know if he and or she is a right.
