A tap of the finger at mid point should give you a hollow sound, sort of a low tone. The sound comes from the air between and around the seeds. A seedless watermelon is judged by weight in comparison to the girth. If the melon looks larger and feels light, air has expanded it and it is riper than the first one you tried. Be couscous of the really light ones for they maybe over ripe and lack the juices that give it the most flavor. No one likes a dry melon.

1- by beating it u'll notice a different sound. like it's deep and hollow (something like a dull drum??)

2- it might smell but if its smell is too strong that's not good

3- if u find it heavier than it should be. let's say a medium one weighs the same as a big one then that's a good juicy watermelon

Its bout the sound. When you pat it nearing your ear it should sound as if the sound is hard to come by. The logic is as the fruit ripe there is extra juice start accumulating inside which makes the sound difficult to travel.
Enjoy.
