the answer is NO

there are too many companies and organizations with proprietary technology... One format that you'll never get any other player to play is REAL audio or video (stupid company).

If you're going for PC based software to play lots of different formats. Try winamp ... www.winamp.com ... don't bother buying it. Just get the free version, and then go pick up a codec pack to update the codecs for m4a, mpeg4, divx etc...
