unfortunately, those same communities believe that the more children you have, the better your life will be when they grow up since the children are expected to support their elderly parents

Women are going to get abortions whether it's legal or not. If it is legalised though, it means the procedure can be done in a clean safe environment and not in a back alley with rusty tools.
Western countries realised this a while ago. Gone are the days in England where women had to go into someone's kitchen and have an abortion with a slippery elm stick and no drugs. Many women used to die, if not from the procedure then from infection afterwards. Thank God that doesn't happen anymore!

This is an interesting question with so many sides to look at! I personally am totally against abortion except for exceptional circumstances such as pregnancy as the result of rape or something. But as you say, in African countries there is such a lack of contraception that abortion could be the answer. Certainly given me something to think about

Abortion should NEVER be considered as 'contraception'! Totally innocent children must never be casually destroyed. Birth control is what's needed. Take away the money for arms and from the corrupt government and get a radical contraception programme going. Africa is a self perpetuating problem. Shame on the 'leaders'!

YES!!!
it might help cut down the aids death rates in children!
in africa, the men marry a woman but since there are little to none in the way of women's rights, the men go out and cheat as a habit and there is no consequence except the death they bring home to their wives and subsequent children. the men there ought to be held responsible for the lives they ruin and end! in all nations, not just african nations!
dude, you're a guy, what would you know?
any personal experiences?
have you had any abortions?
no!!
so go to the cars section and talk about something you're qualified to debate and leave the life issues to the life bearers!!
good idea about the guns though... LOL

i know that if you live in the west you are lucky.we will never have to endure the atrocities committed to these people. you are right there are too many children being born to children from being raped.i don't know if abortion solves this problem. it sounds simple enough but we can't decide if a woman can reproduce or not. I'm sure most women there want children that is just what they do. women have children as many as god blesses them with. i believe this is the way they live. i wish there could be a international program for women to at least take birth control and for men to use condoms. but keep in mind that these countries accept rape as a common thing. its all very heartbreaking.

I feel it should be legalised and controlled in Africa if that is what women want. I think it is far better to have legalised abortions done in a proper health care setting, where risks and infections are minimised and patient care is up to a good standard, more women die from having illegal abortions than anywhere else in the world. Let the women decide what is right for them and the children they are caring for. And yes education is always the key in making informed decisions.

give them condoms and make them use them for God sake! It's preposterous that no one realises that 3rd World countries suffer from famine and death of youngsters due to the alarming rate that they reproduce!
I do not think that there would be a need for Live Aid and cancelling world debt if instead of shagging all the time, these people had a limit on childbirth (like China) and then there would not be as many people, therefore there'd be the jobs and more importantly the food and medicine to go around and they could start sorting themselves out.
It's disgraceful that in the 21st century no one is addressing the problem, and instead you get muppets like Bob 'give me your f'ing money' Geldoff trying to blanket the issue by blaming the World's super powers for asking for repayments on loans.

Murder is legal in many places of Africa. However I feel there are more humane methods of contraception. The idea that an abortion is better for anyone than a condom is still confuses me.

A lot of the poor people you refer to hardly have the money to feed themselves and afford basic healthcare. I suspect abortion is legal in most of the countries. The question is who can afford it?

Even if additional people would be difficult to provide for, it's not an excuse to murder them, and abortion is murder. I don't think abortion should be legalized because no humane society should allow it's weakest and most vulnerable members to be slaughtered.
