Are the chemicals bad for my body? Also, do they badly damage the hair itself?

They can be damaging to your hair, if not treated properly. The person doing the perm should be able to advise you on everything you need to know to care for it. That's the key...if you want the best for your hair, have a professional do it. Home perms produce some of the worst horror stories imaginable.

Only if they are not carried out correctly. I have seen some awful perms and some lovely ones as well. But bear in mind, chemical damage will occur and your hair will require constant treatment.

I have had a perm before and it wasn't dangerous. It may dry out your hair if you've processed it a lot, like dying, blow drying and using curling/flat irons. If you're hair is healthy you shouldn't have a problem, just ask the stylist to suggest the best products to keep your hair healthy.

No, when treated properly perms are great. Just make sure that you are not allergic to the chemicals.
