They don't. Actually, they're not actually pain relievers more like brain confusers. They act by temporarily blocking off pain receptors throughout your body (not just in one localized area). Also, they assist by decreasing inflammation, so it's kinda like putting water on a fire.

That doesn't sound very healthy, but, it depends on the potency of the pills and their ingredients. Any regular pain relievers that you would buy at a pharmacy would most likely kill you. DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE IT. If you took 20 Tylenol™, or 20 acetaminophen, that will, for sure, cause nephrotoxicity, leading to renal (kidney) failure, and will require dialysis. That's if your heart doesn't stop. If you did something like this, you should probably go to the ER, where they will give you some charcoal to neutralize the medications.

It doesn't .. they supress the areas of the brain, or more correctly the transfer mechanism in the brain, that allows you to feel pain in general.

It simply blocks your pain receptors in your brain it does not actually target the source of the pain.

Pain receptors. I dunno. First thing that popped into my head. I just always figured it went all over, but of course you are only going to feel relief where it hurts.
