It is very common for a dentist to prescribe Amoxil 500mg qid (4 times per day) for a tooth infection.

Cipro (i.e. ciprofloxacin) four times a day? Don't think so. It's generally qday or q12, with varying dosages.

A lot of doctors (i.e. dentists and physicians) prescribe Amoxicillin for dental infections, which is somewhat inappropriate.

Penicillin VK 500mg q6 is the drug of choice for dental/oral infections. Amoxicillin is equally suitable for coverage of oral baceria, however, it is unnecessary because it also covers certain sinus bacteria (e.g. Haemophilus influenza, moraxella catarrhalis, and strep. pneumoniae....I'm sure I butchered the spellings) as well as E. coli. These bacteria are rarely involved in infections of the mouth (especially E. coli).

Amoxicillin has a longer half-life than Penicillin and I believe has a greater GI uptake, and can thus be taken q8 rather than q6. Thus, while it's ok to take Amoxicillin q6 (i.e. ever 6 hours or 4/day), the appropriate dosing is q8 (i.e. 3/day).

Usually something like Cipro is prescribed but four times a day of amoxicillan would be quit appropriate especially if the root is infected. It sounds like you have an abscess and your dentist will proceed with root canal. Don't worry they are more time consuming than anything. By the way, I have been on amoxicillan 500mg. (red and black capsules) four times daily.

Amoxy 500 can be taken 8 hourly or TDS but i think you should better stick to the advice of the doctor as the dosage might depend on the type and severity of the infection.

2000mg (4 times 500mg) of Amoxicillin a day is the right dose. Usually 1500mg (3 times a day) is not enough.

The dentist I work for chooses to prescribe PennicillinVK 500mg to be taken every 6 hrs as opposed to Amox. He will also, depending on the patient, prescribe other anitibiotics such as Duricef, Keflex, Clocin, etc. Consult your dentist if you have questions regarding your medications.

yes that is normal.....if it wasn't fine then the doctor or the pharmacy wouldn't have given it to you but if you are really worried then just take 3 a day.
