The original settlers of the USA were british. It was considered a shame to be sent to the Americas at first, because it was also a penal colony, similar to Australia. Immigrants really didn't start coming over in mass waves until after the revolution, and English had already been established as the official language. That and the fact that it was ruled by the british and settled by the british.

It is surprising how many Americans do not realise that the Fench, Spanish and the Dutch were here long before the English. English is only the 'official' language because the English had bigger guns. That's something to be proud of eh?

Because the majority of men in the revolutionary war were orginally from Britian, where they spoke english. However TECHNICALLY, it wasn't chosen. Because if you look at our words we have slang usage of English, French and Spanish. However since my ancestors had the learn English in order to fit in, and my native american ancestors had to learn english to fit it I don't see why it should be a problem for anyone else who want to live in American. Billions of other immigrants before have learned English. the new once are not any more special.

The vast majority of the original colonies were English. Frankly I don't care which one it is, as long as we choose one. Things start getting complicated when you have to print things in multiple languages.
