There are several causes of deterioration of vision with age.
The most common condition is called presbyopia (i.e. "old eyes").
The lens in our eyes is more like a bag of jello than a glass lens in a camera. The muscles surrounding the lens causes it to deform and bend light on to the retina at the back of the eye which is then translated by the rods and cones into an electrical signal that our brains interpret as shapes and colors.
As we age, the lens in our eyes lose flexiblity and has greater difficulty focusing images on the retina. So everything becomes blurry until we get reading glasses.
Another reason that we lose vision is due to clouding of the lens. The lens can develop defects, called cataracts, within it that prevent light from passing through. The quick fix to this is surgically replacing your natural lens with an artificial one.
Macular degeneration is a disease process where the lens is not the cause of the vision problem, but rather the retina itself. The cones in the macula, the most sensitive part of the retina that represents the center of your visual field, for one reason or another begins to degrade and are no longer able to transform the images of light into electrical signals. This is a very unfortunate but relatively uncommon condition that can lead to partial blindness. It has no known cure at this time.

Types of Macular Degeneration
There are two types of macular degeneration: the dry or atrophic type, and the wet or hemorrhagic type. Dry ARMD is the more common form, and is caused by the atrophy of the tissue of the macula. Yellowish deposits called drusen form under the macula, causing it to thin and dry out. It is the less severe of the two types of ARMD. There is no known treatment that prevents macular degeneration or that can reverse the loss of vision, and there is no specific medical treatment to restore vision
