Arent the people who try and stop the person from committing suicide the ones who are selfish? They just want the person around even though they don't want to live anymore. Isnt that the selfishness that the person should stay alive just for them even though the person doesnt want to?

People think suicide is selfish because they don't understand depression. They don't know what it's like to be so seriously depressed that misery and pain take over your life and the depressed person just desperately wants to get out of this misery and pain, they feel like they can't go on like that, and they're so ill that they think there is just one way out of it... suicide.
When a person is depressed and suicidal the chemicals in their brain aren't the way they should be, that's the cause of the depression. This mess with the chemicals effects the way the brain works and when the depression gets really serious the person can't think clearly and right anymore, they're out of their mind. At that point, the only thought that gets through is to end the misery somehow. They can't think clearly about how their death will effect close ones. They might even think that everyone will be better off without them, because they think they're so useless, hopeless etc.
Suicide is the result of a very serious illness. People who commit suicide have very serious mental problems. They're not selfish, they're really ill and not in their right mind. But mental illness is something some people can't understand because they haven't experienced it first hand, and a lot of people are ignorant about mental illnesses.
When someone you love is suicidal the best you can do for them is to try to help them by getting them to see a professional and to use medication, and by supporting them. Most people can be saved, they can get over their illness and become healthy and happy again.

They aren't so much as selfish, but taking the easy way out, and not looking at all the other options. The people who try to stop them are trying to help, plus we know how mmuch grief it can cause a person when someone dies, it's especially painfull when they take their own life. Most the time it's because they think know one cares, so shouldn't we stop them, and show them we care and are here to help? Usually the person who is suicidal is going through a temporary problem, and he/she chooses a permanent problem. So that why we don't let it happen.

Suicide is group murder ...be nicer. Stay with the facts. Why are men dying 4 times faster by suicide than females and why are non-whites only half as likely to do suicide as whites. Certainly a family cannot stop a runaway engine but why was the pressure there in the first place.

The way that the suicidal person is being selfish is by not considering how they're death will effect others....
If a person with children comits suicide then i think that they are being selfish. They have obviously put they're pain first before they're childs and therefore selfish.

When people kill themselves they think they aren't thinking people love them. They do it out of desperation, unhappiness and stress. When they die then families feel like they didn't do enough to prevent this or sometimes hate the victim for leaving them so soon.

luk pal.... don't u hav family, friends.......loved ones.....
remember that when u commit suicide u will leave u'r loved ones...not only physically... but also u end up hurting them a lot 'coz they will go on(live their life) wondering what made somebody they love go thru suicide ... and in a way u'r hurting them a whole lot .. remember that they r u'r loved ones....
but then again its ur choice..... but when u feel like it ,think abt putting u'r selves in the shoes of another "not " so privileged person... understand that everybody hav some kind of problem or the other but suicide is kind of like chickening out(sorry don't mean in a rude sense),just learn to go thru the problem.. eventhough suicide seems much easier...
try to hav FAITH and STRENGTH and BELIEF in u'r self....
other reason could be said frm a religious sense.... where u cannot commit suicide .. but i don't think u want to knw that one..

It is because after you die, its your family and friends that are left behind wondering what they could have done to save you...
In that sense, it's being selfish rite?
