The Americans had a reason to be in Vietnam, more or less, so people shouldn't have spat on 'em too much. But Iraq? No reason : so the locals have every reason to spit. The poor GIs will just have to put up with it. At least they have body armour - maybe face plates would be a good anti-spit precaution.

You can come over here & spit on me if you want, but you won't like my unprofessional response. If an Iraqi did that on patrol, I'd be thinking about how many of us would have just been killed if they had a grenade - but they have more right, because I respect bravery & laoth cowardice. You mentioned that people here "are uneducated about the war"? I'd say you are too. Go walk a year in their boots & then come back here and speak when you're qualified to do so.
What happened with these marines is messed up. Just barely more messed up than it being leaked like it has so they can never get a fair trial. Oh well, screw justice as long as the news runs on time, right? I can understand their anger & frustration, but I can't phathom how this would have seemed okay. All I know is civilians get killed in war, many times more by their side than ours, and that sucks but get over it. Fewer Iraqi civilians have died in this war then have been dug up in any of several mass graves. We'll come home when the job's done & not before unless the politicians wimp out. You can say what you want, but nobody gives a crap till you've stood the line. So unlimited would be the answer. You really think I can take fire for a year, watch best friends die, and then have anything you could do phase me? You're not helping, you're just a punk & sooner or later somebody'll be feeling "unprofessional."

I believe that in all armies there are bad apples, you cannot label the whole group. Most of our soldiers love their country and want the best for Iraq. In fact, the soldiers are making buildings and they helped put girls in schools.
After Vietnam, many soldiers who came back were treated terribly by those, like yourself, who unfairly generalized the whole group. These people fought for their country, as they had to under a draft, while slackers like yourself, stayed back and took advantage of deferments while heckling the soldiers who had to go (although in this case there is not a draft but those who had to go did so because of financial or obligatory reasons).
I am sorry to tell you this, but this is how war is. You will find a few bad men and women in the whole bunch. I will not be spitting on the soldiers when they come back, unlike your ignorant self, I will be in the majority who understands that most of the soldiers did no harm.

look up the Milgram obedience study and Zimbardo prison psychology experiment. it may change your opinion about the soldiers. these types of horrible acts will happen time and time again until the military changes the way they groom their soldiers. it is not the soldier's fault, it's the people and policy in charge. good people, just like you, can be reduced to this situation under the right circumstances in very little time. i'm not going to get into the experiments, but you should definitely read up on it. it's worth your time and will shed some new light about these massacres.

We have a saying in the military. There is always someone. No matter where you go or what you do there is always someone that will do something stupid. Just remember all the people the insergents are killing everyday. There isn't even a comparison. Oh and by the way the marines who did it will be put on trial by they're fellow marines. The insergents will praise each other for killing innocents.

The My Lai massacre was not done due to spit. One of thier most beloved sargents was killed by a villager and his body horribly mutilated. The outrage of that act is what triggered the My Lai massacre. It was a reaction to an atrocity

The real question is how many GI's have you spit on and walked away? You talk some serious smack on the Internet, but we know you're the spineless type. Truth is you would pee your pants rather than have enough balls to approach a GI or a Marine...
