This is not unusual in male puppies. He will lift his leg when he gets older...I heard it happens when the hormones kick in.

Generally speaking you can't. It is something that he will start to do as he matures. Young male puppies will squat every time out of instinct and because they don't have the balance to stand on 3 legs just yet. Also he isn't mature enough to want or need to mark his territory yet. This will come with time and each breed reaches maturity at a different age.

To try to help the process along when you go outside take him immediately to a bush, tree, fire hydrant or pole. Something that another male dog will have marked. When a male dog lifts his leg to pee he is doing it to mark his territory. If you take him to the same bush, tree, etc. every time eventually he will mark it.

Even adult male dogs will squat to pee every now and then. The uprightness of a bush or tree gives them the stability to stand on three legs. If you continue to allow him to pee in an open area he will continue to squat.

In the end does it really matter that much if he does or doesn't lift his leg so long as he his going outside rather than having accidents in the house?

Five months is a little too young. Dogs mature at different rates, just as people do, but not many are ready to lift their leg at 5 months. He will learn faster if he has an older male to learn from. You might find dogs in the dog parks and follow adult dogs. But, he will learn eventually on his own. It takes alot of balance and concentration to do this, so the hormones must be there to make him want to.

You should give him some company of a senior member of his species. Yougnsters always try to imitate the seniors.

The issue is complex, since if you try on your own, you will have to define the conditions in which to lift the left (hind) leg or the right (hind) leg ! And make the pup to understand this ! ( I assume that you expect the animal to lift the hind leg and not the front ).

By the way do you know his ancestral habits?

Most male dogs develop this trait as they reach adolescence. He may not being to do it regularly until he is older but I have a male dog that sometimes lifts his leg and sometimes doesn't. Just depends on his mood, I guess.

i think they will just lift it up themselves as they get older. its a natural thing for them. mines train itself when he was about 8 months. but ever since then he lifts it up at every other pole we pass by.

The pup will learn this on his own....it is a natural occurrence.
Get them an appointment with the vet for a spay/neuter surgery.

Trust me, you don't want him to... once he starts lifting his leg, he'll start peeing on everything. Get him "fixed" that way he don't have the urge to lift his leg. TRUST ME!

~I took mine out to the fire hydrant and demonstrated twice a day for three weeks. I think he learned after the first time, but we were both having too much fun to stop.
