An excellent way to go is to get you dog through the local animal shelter, pound or whatever it's call in your neck of the woods. This is a good thing for you, the dog and your community. They usually have someone there who can help you decide upon breeds, size, training, health factors depending upon your facilities.
Then there another way to go, the expensive way and that is to get the dog from a reputable breeder, they would have a website on the web. The best thing to do is to first know the breed, if you don’t then with a few breeds in mind go to a benched dog show in your area and talk to the breeders. There is no need to be in a rush. Have them explain the difference to you between a show and companion quality.
Whatever you do you do not want to get a dog through the paper, pet stores or a free pup. Dogs from those types of breeders may or may not have much in the line of honesty; you don’t know what types of diseases, or genetic problems you may be getting saddled with.

You should go on petfinder.com they have tons of animals that are local. you could search for puppies or adult dogs. put just in your zip code and you could go visit these dogs that they post up. they include pictures and additional descriptions about them. they are very honest about any problems they might have. theres tons of puppies and dogs wanting to be adopted with a small adoption fee. I suggest you look here because it would be a lot cheaper than buying one online and having it shipped. Petfinder.com has pets listed from various animal shelters. It's like visiting each and every shelter at once. Just get an idea of what they have.
And if you're just interested in buying one online, paypal is the safest way. Make sure these websites are professional ones. If it is from a breeder, they should have their contact information. Give them a call to make sure this is not fake. And look for dogs of those breeds online to see if the pricing seems reasonable.

Don't --- you will get a puppy mill dog, with unknown genetic problems, other health problems, no socilization......
It's OK to make contact with a breeder via the internet but look for a breeder who's gonna ask YOU 101 questions (till you think you're adopting a baby) and maybe you will need references. The best breeders ARE adopting out their "babies". If you jump through those hoops, frequently the dog will cost no more & maybe less than will be sharged by a pet store or internet dealer

Don't go to petfinder.com This is where the puppy millers and back yard breeders sell. Do find the website of a good breeder. Most good breeders attach conditions with selling a pup, such as what food to feed, when to spay/neuter, etc. They want to pup to be healthy and have a good life. Puppy Millers only want to money. Good breeders will sell their pet quality (mismarked for showing) at the same price as the back yard breeders. The quality of these pups is far superior.

Yes....make a difference and adopt a dog from your local shelter .Most of them have either been abandoned, or lost,so, help save a life and find a wonderful friend, plus that way you don't get to encourage folks to profit from selling animals which I desagree with because animals shouldn't be for sale at all because all that we should care about is to find good homes for them.

If you want my answer, don't support breeders. Adopt and save a life. You can see what you're getting that way, most of the time adoption fees include spaying or neutering, the animals are almost always more affectionate, and sometimes you can even find a purebred with papers.

Be sure to ask for referrences., and contact those people. Ask for a contract ..BEFORE purchase, so you have time to study it. Make sure that the health garantee will hold water.
For instance, my guarantee states that I will take the dog back for a full refund, minus shipping, if they can even think about parting with it...any time, for any reason.

You should go to the local animal shelter in your town, and adopt a dog. There are a lot of great animals, that desperately need a good home.
