It is going to take time. I would try to do more activities with your pet to help with the loneliness and boredom. You could try walks or a new toy. If the other dog doesn't return and this continues then maybe a new puppy would give the old dog something to do to keep their mind busy.
But be careful to not show too much attention to the puppy, make sure the old dog is part of the process.

It usually takes about 3 weeks for the dog to begin recovering from his loss of a friend.
Just give him lots of love and understanding.
Take him new places to give him enthusiasm.
Offer new chew toys, such as a rope toy soaked in low sodium chicken broth and then dried in a slow oven. They seldom refuse this at any age, and it is wonderful for his teeth.

Bring in a puppy.
Children (even of animals) make a difference in grown ups lives.
I can already visualize it... the pup jumping on your dog, biting it, playing with it... in begining your dog will ignore the pup... later your dog will start participating in games with the pup.
It will bring back old memories that will cheer your dog up.

Dogs do go through a mourning stage. A little extra attention, and maybe another dog is in order.

I'm not sure if any dog can replace the one who ran away, but maybe if you get another one to keep the poor thing company :(

It does not sound like the other dog ran away. rather something happened to it.
If it were me, i'd take this dog for walks and see if it can locate the missing one.

Try buying another dog, the same breed, and the same color, so at least they'll have a resemblance.
