i live in the UK, but where do i start?

Start from what you know and work backwards. Get as much information from living relatives as you can. Then work back from that. See ancestry.co.uk for a website which helps greatly.

Try asking the British Library in London. If your family lived in a specific area for a long time you should be able to look at copies of local newspapers to see if you can find references to them.

If you have relatives who fought in either of the World Wars the Imperial War Museum has a database you can acccess in the museum.

There will be other places to look but these might help. Good luck!

Another resource would be the Church of Latter Day Saints or Mormons in Utah. They are accepted experts in geneology as extensive records as they possibly can. A cousin of mine did this for my mother's Mother's part of the family and was able to go back about 20 generations. And this was for Eastern European jewish peasant stock!

Once you know where people have lived, also try parish records as they record all births, deaths and marriages and can be very helpful once you are going back into the past a bit more.

Well, my sister used www.genesreunited.co.uk and found most of our family, going all the way back to the Doomsday Book!
