Yes you can! Don't fall for the scare tatics they use to dissuade you like "you'll get stiff". You'll just become an even more powerful karateka!

Think about it. Power= Mass x Speed. The mass is your weight and what allows you to move your mass with speed is your strength. The stronger you are the faster you will be able to move your body.....provided you train correctly!

Just remember to stretch often and well.

Bruce Lee trained very heavily with weights and he was one of the best martial artists of all time!

The biggest problem with lifting weights while training in karate is the practioner. It is true that with greater mass comes less flexability, but this is because most weight lifters do not stretch adequately after lifting, and on a regular basis. Stretching allows the muscles to stay flexible. So, although you may lose some flexability due to the mass of muscle, it will not that significant, and in fact training in both will most likely make your muscle stronger and healthier.

A couple of these answers provide only half-truths.

While it's true that Bruce Lee lifted weights he did so only as part of conditioning... he didn't lift massive amounts of weights and he certainly didn't want to put on body mass.

He toned himself and made himself a 'rock'.

You CAN lift.... but you can only lift a smaller amount of weights doing more repititions.

If you choose to lift heavier amounts and 'bulk' up... you'll basically lose your agility and the ability to perform Karate at a higher level.

You can but a great portion of karate has to do with quickness and flexibility while building muscle mass doesn't exactly help in either of those areas. While you'll be able to absorb some punches better, I would concentrate on one or the other. I am no professional, not even an amateur in either areas but a dabbler. I am pretty sure a professional in either karate or body building would back my guess.

Lifting wieght will help greatly. I train in two martial art style and I lift weight. It has only made me better at it. It has also made me stronger and i can now take on opponets who outway me but over 20 pounds.

If your worried about losing flexability dont worry you wont that only happens if you get super huge like those body builders.

Yes. But karate involves flexibility. To be flexible, weights are the last thing you want to do. People who do weights lose flexibility so I would say to do one you have to sacrifice the other.

Definitely! In fact, each compliments the other. Martial Arts for flexibility and weights for strength..combine both.you will look hot and kick ***....but as anything else..you have to be balanced.
