I can't imagine why someone would prefer online dating over real-world dating, but I can see the appeal in looking for real-world partners on internet sites. Online personal sites have huge numbers of potential mates in a small place, and there is zero risk of embarassment just by looking. I think that most people who meet online prefer to take their relationships into the real world as soon as possible...
... although I wouldn't know, as I've never participated in online dating.

Internet dating is great for busy people. I met my significant other online...BUT the online thing was merely an introduction. We met in person within a week and found out we were compatible. I think that is the key. Use the computer to meet but after that take it to the "real world".

There isn't nearly as much pressure to be "in the moment" via internet dating. You can get to know someone much more casually and without being on the spot to be impressive immediately.
I'm more a fan of traditional dating, but there's nothing wrong with the internet method.

Hopefully, if everyone is honest, you already know a great deal about the other person. Their likes, dislikes, taste in music, dining, politics, hobbies, etc. Seems to make a great foundation for future dating.
