Windows Movie Maker, although supplied for free with MS Windows, is a very memory-heavy application, and quite unstable. My dealings with it in the past have also led to the same problems, which led me to stop using it altogether.

If you still insist on using this software, I recommend a major RAM upgrade. After upgrading from 128 to 512 MB, I noticed a significant (though not necessarily satisfactory) change! Also, MS WMM tends to give you problems with .avi files in particular. Avoid those where possible.

Hope this helped!

Because Windows movie maker is a poor excuse for an editing system. Its not made to handle other programs at once. There are so many factors. Could be your using a quicktime and Im pretty sure Windows movie maker doesnt accept quicktimes and/or other formats besides and mpeg or avi...get a good editing system ...User friendly go pinnacle studio 10...Want to stay user friendly and get crafty...Go Sony Vegas

Check for viruses or reinstall Windows. Note: Reinstalling may cause some programs not to work, but doesnt effect Windows Movie Maker.

something easy you can try is to reboot right before using Movie Maker so you have full memory etc. available. This solved the problem for me.
Also, as you go, do a save every so often. You can always pick up from there should the program quit before you are finished.

maybe your moviemaker files are corrupted....try reinstalling it...
also, is your windows temp folder full? is your hard drive full?
if so, delete some files you don't need....
moviemaker crashes when hard drive is full......check your computer for spyware.....
