Honestly, there aren't too many people who have ever seen God. Some people in the Bible, like Isaiah and Moses saw a glimpse of God's glory, and just seeing that made them fall to their knees and confess that they were unclean.
The pictures you see in churches of Jesus and God are what people imagine them to be like. It's funny that a lot of churches have Jesus looking like a european guy, when really, ancestrally, he was more middle-eastern (Israeli) looking. People like to think they know what God looks like, because that makes them feel comfortable, but I know that there is no way that I could ever fathom what God is like. I can only hope to learn some small pieces about who He is and what He is like from reading the Bible, praying and worship, but I know that what I know is far from being complete.
I think all Christians look forward to the day when they will see God and learn all the answers to the questions we've asked here on Earth and haven't been able to understand or answer.

People need physical representation of Deity for the sake of visualization and identification. God and Jesus are often represented as human (one of which was human) because man needs to feel that Divinity understands humanity. If the Divine beings, like Apollo, Jesus, Zeus, and whomever else were not represented in phyisical forms closest to humanity, man would not be able to grasp even a remote are of this ultimate conciousness. Humans have a need for belief, and a belief that we understood by a Divine source must have physical evidence for future generations to also embrace or understand the belief in the Divine.

The Lord reveals himself to his friends all the time. You know who the Lord is when you become Christrian. If you have seen and known the son of God, Jesus, you have also seen and know the Father. Luke 10:22, and Matthew 11:27, and John 6:46.

A very few people have been privileged to see God as He is: Prophets from the Old Testament, modern day Prophet Joseph Smith. Thye have shared their observations with the rest of the world. That's how we know that God is a male and that He does exist. "God made man in His own image," etc.

the images come from the imagination ,as so much of the story does

God or Jesus, because I don't think anyone has a picture of God, if you found one please leave a link.
I don't know what Jesus looked like, but I'm betting he wasn't blond with blue eyes.
