can the story of Genesis be taken as a literal truth? were adam and eve people of history?
whats wrong with giving this story a modern meaning? as i understand while most christians and jews have rejected the literal meaning of this story, muslims havent even taken this first step towards modern knowledge. To my knowledge all the problems we find in islam today is due to muslims still taking their koran as a literal truth.
am i right?

What's so difficult with believing that God created everything, including man and woman, and that when he created them, they were perfect, but he gave them the ability to make their own decisions, and they chose poorly and committed the first sin?

Compare that to evolution, which states that the earth has always been here, or came about as a result of a huge explosion (which came from nowhere) and somehow magically bacteria transformed themselves into larger organisms, which became larger and larger and changed from form to form, and that this process is responsible for all the variety of lifeforms we have today, despite the complete lack of evidence in the fossil record that transitional forms ever existed?

I think it's much easier to believe that God created this earth, and not so long ago (maybe about 4,000 years ago) and that when he created it, he created it with the appearance of age. Just like when he created the animals, and Adam and Eve...they didn't look like babies, even though they were only a day old. If a scientist were to examine them, he'd say they were around twenty years old, but Adam and Eve were created that day.

By a "modern meaning" you are suggesting calling everything a "fairy tale" and what you should realize is that if the Genesis story isn't true, and God didn't create us, Adam and Eve didn't sin, and the world didn't inherit sin-nature from them, then there was no reason for Jesus to come and die on the cross to save everyone who believes in him from all past, present and future sin. Any true Christian must believe in the creation story, lest salvation lose its truth and significance.

You're giving Christians too much credit for intelligent interpretation of the Bible. From what I have experienced most Christians still read the story of Adam and Eve and creation as literal, and that is why they can't accept evolution. Also, unfortunately right wing christians aren't able to see the similiarities between their rigid belief system and fundamentalist muslims.

I don't know where you get your information. Every religious Jew knows that the story of Adam and Eve is indeed literal!! It happened and was written in the Torah to teach us a lesson. There are a lot of things that happened that were not written in the Torah. That's because G-d only wrote about things that could teach us things, and that would apply to us forever!!
