If you don't want to lie, but just can't take a full day of family... why not volunteer that day at one of the shelters.

If you don't mind telling a lie, you are sick. Must have been some bad seafood at that party last night.

On the other hand... If you are talking about your spouse and kids... sorry you're S.O.L.
Your only chance is join the military, become a pilot, doctor or nurse.

There is a third option. Tell them you have a few things to do and arrive a bit late, than leave early. Christmas is a time for family, however sometimes some of us must take 'family' in small doses.

Tell them you need to go on a holiday on your own (which you don't have a chance to do since you are required to spend Christmas with them every year). Tell them the season holidays are the only time you can take days off or have leave for the vacation and you have to make the most of the opportunity. Why not make a habit of not spending Christmas with family on alternate years.

Getting fired if you don't work on Christmas day will probably be your most plausible excuse short of contracting a deadly and contagious disease.

Oh wait... just thought of something.... a few days before Christmas you have to travel out of the country for work and then you couldn't get a flight back in time OR you had a booking which got cancelled by the airline. BUT... you really have to act like you're really bummed you can't come home in time. Then, you have to live with this lie... if you can.

Go on vacation...
Call off sick...
Tell them you've double booked yourself

Or, you may be able to get away with it by using an excuse then offering to spend some time with them anyway. Like, you are making a sacrifice and they'll just be happy with the sacrifice...even if its only an hour.

We've made vacation plans over the holidays before. But, managed to squeeze a few hours with my family before that. This year we planned the vacation after Christmas...

Whatever you do, its best to be honest. People can sense out dishonesty a lot easier at the holidays!!

Are you kidding? You're going to hurt their feelings; there is no way around that. So suck it up and tell the people you don't like spending Christmas with them and why. It will be the best thing you can do, since it will set a precedent that will enable you to be more assertive in future. It's called shock therapy. All families need this.

If you have a job that doesn't necessarily stop on Christmas, working can be a good excuse.

I'm a commercial pilot by trade and so as a result - I do sometimes have to work over the time and at other times it could serve me well as an excuse!

Best of luck!

You can avoid it by spending it with ur friends by going to out for lunch or dinner and play with them and do other exciting thing the whole day and then come back to ur house. By this way u can avoid by spending it with ur family.

Tell them now that you have made plans to spend the holidays either on a trip or with friends so you won't be available this year. Plans made this far in advance will be believable.

Some people they are happy enough if the whole family are together but sometimes it is not complete. How can you be happy if you can see your family is in hunger?
So you need to do something. For example: You are working abroad and you can't go home. I guess you are away from your family.
