Cairns and the mission beach area. You take a drive to mission beach through the lush rainforest. Its very nice and theres so much to do. Its affortable and there are towns on the way. It also helps out the locals get back on track after the cyclone. Also theres the Great barrier reef which is a must see. Its breathtaking

Why not visit the Whitsundays in North Queensland. It is really beautiful and doesn't get too cold in winter. You can visit the Islands or go for a trip to the outer reef (ReefWorld).
Alice Springs and Ayres Rock (Northern Territory) are also really nice places to visit.

Check out all the tourist spots most are free but if you want a good veiw of where you are it might cost abit. Prebook everything as tickets sell fast for those things. I recommed that you check out the Three Sisters In NSW.

Byron Bay. I have been to most of the other places of the answerers gave above me. But I think Byron Bay is special because it is a hippy beach town and lots of water-based activities.
