There are several criteria to use in buying laptops:

Power - more powerful is better
Price - cheaper is better
Weight - lighter weight is better
Screen Size - bigger screen is better
Upgradability - can you upgrade it in the future?

Personally, the laptop brand that I have found that has a very good mix of these criteria is the Toshiba Portege ultra-slim laptops.

Best bang for your buck is to find someone to build one for you. But, if you have to buy a ready-made one, look at www.sagernotebook.com. They are unbeatable for price versus parts. They are the third-party that build laptops for companies like VoodooPC and Falcon NW that put a pretty paint job on the machine and upcharge several thousand dollars. Seriously, try it. Go to several sites that allow you to customize a machine. I'll bet you the machine from Sager has better parts and still costs $500 to $1000 less than the next alternative.

Getting the best Laptop depends on the pentium. So, the higher the pentium, the higher the brand of laptop.

I just got a new Toshiba in February. It is my first laptop and I like it. I would go to the store or online and compare features and go with the one that has the features you want for the best price. Good Luck.

brands don't really mean much except for the quality of parts on the inside. whats on the inside count's. you need to figure out what you are going to be using it for and go from there. i would definately recommend a 64 bit cpu, because of new programs coming in the future that won't run on a 32 bit platform. AMD is my choice because of lower power consumption and lower operating temperature. if you are using it in a lot of multimedia apps you need to consider the hard drive size and how much storage you need. choose one with at least 512 mb of ram

That depends on what you are using the computer for, is it just word processing or graphics, or what?

I am an iMac fan (duh...my screen name). Been using Macs for over 10 years now.
