car runs fine most times-started this morning and late afternoon-sat for 20 mins. then wouldn't even click. not sure but thought i heard static. i couldn't shift the car into neutral. tried three times then it started. battery and alternator checked fine. not sure what to think. has about 164000 miles. i had to reset the clock and radio all over.

I would check all of the ground connections from the battery to engine to firewall from the engine (ground strap that looks like a shoe lace usualy near the firewall and connected to the intake of the engine ),check all the hot /positive connections,battery to solenoid,and solenoid to starter ( a few have 2 solenoids one on the fender and one on the starter) another part to check is your neutral switch (it completes the circuite from your ignition switch to close the circuit in your solenoid when in park or neutral only )to send the power on to your starter .

I once had a car i couldnt shift and there was a wire/line that was unhooked on the side of the shifter in the console.

check the connections on the battery, check the grounds to the frame, it could be your starter too it might draw too much amps from your battery, it also sounds like you have a draw on your battery. have a good shop check it out.
