I need a used car that will last me a couple of years... probably 2 or 3. And, I'm sort of looking at a 2000 VW Beetle. But, I looked at Consumer Reports, and they're not really the most reliable cars... So, I want to know about personal experiences. Do you have one or know someone who does? And do they like theirs? Let me know! Thanks!

I have a 2002 1.8 Turbo GLX Beetle. It is an awesome car and I have had some fun outrunning quite a few other cars on the road :-). The main problem with these cars that I have heard of is electrical problems. I have had a few problems with mine but nothing serious. The worst was I had to have the wiring harnesses for both headlights replaced, luckily under warranty. Other than that, the only things I have had to quit working was non-essential options such as the heated mirrors and the rain sensor for the windshield wipers and the CD changer acts up a litttle here and there. If you are looking for reliability more than speed, go with one that doesn't have the Turbo and all the options. If if doesn't have all the options, you'll have less to go wrong with the car. As for reliability, I think it's a great buy and a fun car.

I have a 03' Beetle Turbo Limited. It was only sold for 2 yrs. It comes w/ custom 2-tone interior, 17" rims, and other things. I've had sooo many compliments on my car, it's not even funny. I was even at a rest area on some highway and another couple complimented. U will never be bored w/ this car. As long as u maintain it will w/ the usual oil changes and such u should be fine. Oh yeah, if u do end up getting one u will be told a dozen times the "I remember when I drove one of those when I was in college story" =) One problem that I've seen w/ any VW though is electrical, so make sure it's thoroughly checked out if used.

You're better off asking a mechanic who sees a lot of cars about the Beetle rather than asking individual owners whose experience would be with only one car. Have a look at the links below:

I HAVE AN '01 GLX. I'VE NEVER HAD ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH IT. MORE LIKE A LOT OF LITTLE ANNOYANCES. LIKE A DRIVER'S SEAT THAT RUBS AGAINST THE CONSOLE, A HATCH THAT SOMETIME DOESN'T WANT TO CLOSE (OR OPEN ON THE FIRST TRY). NOT TO MENTION A SUNDRY OF SQUEAKS AND RATTLES. BUT I'VE NEVER BEEN STRANDED ON THE ROAD AND IT ALWAYS STARTS ON THE FIRST TRY.
MY BIGGEST "PROBLEM" HAS BEEN W/ SERVICE. I CAN'T COUNT HOW MANY TIMES I'VE GOT IT BACK W/ GREASE OR CIGARETTE ASHES ON MY TAN INTERIOR!
SO I'D SAY GO FOR IT. IT CAN'T HURT TO WALK UP TO A CUSTOMER OR TWO AND ASK HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT THE SERVICE...IF YOU GET A BAD REPORT FIND ANOTHER DEALER.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT I LOVE MY BEETLE (HERMAN), IT MAKE ME SMILE!
BTW...THE '06 COMES W/ A 5CYL.

i think of Roger hit it, yet his placed up grow to be tl;dr... you're interest for a bum motor vehicle trans and regardless of different low-value crap that breaks with VWs. Like skill window classes that value hundreds to repair for having low-value crap plastic interior the doorways wreck. in case your fee selection is restricted, that may no longer your motor vehicle. neither is ANY German motor vehicle.
