My hair is medium and length and thickness, but I have A LOT of hair. I really want a body wave, but I'm not sure I'd be a good candidate as the underlayers of my hair are bleached blond. Though some of my hair has been color treated, I take good care of it by using a reconstructor and a eave-in conditioner every day and keeping the split ends trimmed off. Does anyone with experience know if I'd get good results? Also, because my hair is very layered- the layers go from about chin-length to about two inches below my shoulders- would I be able to get a good result? I want a touseled, bohemian, wavy look rather than tight curls. I know pretty much nothing about perms, and any advice would be greatly appreciated- the salon is closed today and I'm curious! Thanks so much.

The only thing that concerns me about perming your hair is the part that is blonde. Perms have changed so much and there are so many different rods to give you a nice "body" perm. Many aren't as damaging as the ones a few years back. In fact some times the client leaves with their hair in much better condition than before the perm (hard to believe I know).

In my experience (11yrs worth) Perming over hair that has been lightened to blonde is complicated and worse that only part of your hair is lightened to blonde. Essentially the hair that is blonde is more damaged than the rest and requires a different type of perm than the rest of your hair and that is if the blonde hair is strong enough to handle a perm.

I can't see or feel your hair so your stylist will have to give you the final word. I wouldn't worry so much about the blonde because you sound like you take good care of your hair and if your blonde did get dry from the perm you could have it back to tip top shape in no time. Plus it's the hair underneath so it's not like you'll see that it is drier. Your stylist could do a "strand test " on this portion of your hair to see how it will take to the perm and see how much damage will occur before doing your whole head.

As far as the thickness of your ahir and the layers: The layers would be perfect for a permed style and if your hair got too full after perming you stylist could add a few more layers or thin it some to take care of the thickness.

If you decided to go ahead with the perm remember to give yourself some time to get used to your new look before deciding that you hate it.

I had the same problem but my stylist told me to have your hair thinned and then get it done by a professional. You sound like you my hair to a "T". so i believe the same advice would work. Tell me how it goes.,
