if you are one of those tree-hugging freaks that think letting animals live outside WHERE THEY BELONG, please dont bother to answer. Our outside animals have very good care. also i would prefer a large dog to give a presence of a guard dog, but not agressive.

Ok people, listen, because I only want to have to say this once: THEY'RE DOGS! They're decendents of wild animals! There is absolutely nothing whatsoever wrong with a dog staying outside. It's one thing to put a dog on a short chain and never give it any attention. It's a totally different thing to have an outside dog in the country, where the dog has plenty of room and spends plenty of time with people. Some dogs just don't like it inside, and I could argue that forcing a dog to stay inside is cruel! During the spring and summer, we often leave our back door open while we're at home, and you know what, the dogs may come in for a few minutes here and there, but they still spend 90% of the time outside.

Is the dog going to be outdoors all the time, or just at playtime? There's no point in getting a dog if you are not going to make it a true member of your family. Dogs are very social animals and need interaction with their people. Leaving them outside unattended all the time will cause them to grow up to be something other than the loving, playful animal you're envisioning.

Dogs living outside easily die from tick diseases and heartworm(from mosquitoes). If it is going to be strictly an outdoor dog, don't even bother. You don't need a pet that bad. It's quite OK if you don't like my answer. I'm just being truthful.

Depending on where you live...(long or short hair), as long as there is MORE THAN ONE DOG, a BIG FENCED in yard, ADEQUATE SHELTER, and plenty of food and water there is no problem with having outdoor dogs. Great family dogs include:

Newfoundlands are incredible dogs. They are large and need a lot of space. They are also great with children. I have a Newf who is very good with my 16 month old sons.

Great Danes are big, gentle, cute, and good guard dogs. German Shepherds and Australian Shepherds are good, too. Or Border Collies.
