Quite frankly, there is not a shred of evidence that there is a hell or an afterlife.
Thinking about things rationally, which makes more sense:
1. We die and break down into simpler components just like plants and animals.
2. An invisible man in the sky is testing us on earth and will punish or reward us based on how we behave.
When you add to this the fact that the only evidence that there is a man in the sky is a bunch of conflicting books that cite only themselves as sources it becomes rather easy to see why we just don't believe it.

What is your knowledge based on? I am a Christian , but I am a different kind of Christian than the majority. I do not believe in the hell that is taught by the majority of Christians. I used to, but no longer. I have found a merciful, forgiving, full of grace, understanding, and most of all, loving God. And the Savior I worship is not the failure that the majority of Christians have turned him into. Where do you get your information? From the Church, from man? Do you ever study the Bible for yourself? I don't mean read it, I mean study it! Its easier to study the Bible today than it ever has been. Throw all man written books about Christianity in the trash, and study Gods word. There are truths in the Bible that man can't, or will not give you. Do you know what or who Babylon is in Revelations? You would be shocked to find out. Get you a good Greek/Hebrew lexicon and dictionary and learn Gods word. And pray earnestly to God for wisdom and understanding. He will give it to you. God is not an evil God, who is going to roast His children, and torture and torment in conscience pain forever. And Jesus came to save the world, and He did, He said "It is finished", right before He died on the cross. Why can't Christians believe Him?? Todays believers are chosen by the Father, and they have a special salvation, but that doesn't mean the rest of mankind are going to fry for an eternity. In 1 Tim.4:10 this is what Paul says....For therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, WHO IS the Savior of all men, especially of those that believe. Now the leaders and teachers, want to twist that around and say that God WANTS all men to be saved. Just like they twist all the other hundreds of verses that point to salvation for all. Look at the world today and think about it, just how many people are going into that hideous hell, that you believe in? Most of them? Would you say the majority of them? Well you would be right. Doe's that lay a heavy feeling on your heart? It should......

And what is your knowledge based on that their is a Hell or Heaven or Jesus?
A book and your belief.
I'd rather live my life here and now that in fear of being reprimanded when I die. Thank you very much!

the lack of evidence to support the fiction that people base religion upon. the fact that religion has continued to backpedal as science has progressed over the years expelling the myths and ignorance which spawned gods. and there is no logical support for a sky-king the last accounts were 2,000 years old and made by people who thought the world was flat. add to that the people who believe in it are all fighting over what they consider to be true. it is all a bunch of superstitious fictional junk, grow up and stop believing in magic, it isn't real.

I'm agnostic, but I'm gonna answer anyways:
Lack of evidence.
If I told you when you die, you visit a giant tree and make cookies with the elves...would you believe me? Why not? What is your knowledge based on?

It's based on there being no evidence of anything else. Admittedly, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, but to atheists, I think, it just doesn't make sense to believe in anything for which there is absolutely no evidence.

Everything living dies and everything dead rots. It may seem vastly unfair, but there's no reason to suppose that human beings should be exempt from any natural process. No amount of prayer or fantasy will change that.

The fact that no one has yet offered objectively verifiable evidence that there is any other possibility.
"Belief" is not proof or evidence.
