If you are symptomatic, take the thyroid supplement. If you aren't, don't. Simple.

Can't tell if you are symptomatic? Take the supplements for a month and see how you feel afterwards.

Don't bother with alternative crap. Synthroid is safe, effective, and probably cheaper in the long run.

I feel like a broken record with this but here we go....DO NOT SCREW AROUND WITH YOUR THYROID! Do some research and find out about your thyroid. It is a little gland but it regulates dang near every organ in your body, including fertility. Do not take any alternative therapies, I have seen so many people SO SICK from messing with that crap rather than just doing the Synthroid right out of the gate. And ((VERY IMPORTANT)) do not substitute your brand name meds for generic. When it comes to the thyroid there is not a generic equivalent. The pharmacy will fight you tooth and nail on this but I can't stress it enough. It's worth the extra $2-$3 (yes that's all) a month.

I would say your best bet is a change of diet and thyroid supplements. Synthroid is something I would say don't take if it's not absolutely necessary. Synthroid can reduce your bone mass as much as 13% and you do have to take it for the rest of your life. Here are some things you can do:You can go to your local health food store or GNC and get thyroid support. It's a liquid you put under your tounge, my mom takes it it works. If your doctor is open to the idea, ask for Armour Thyroid Tablets. It's all natural and helps replace deficient thyroid hormone.Take this in consideration, treatment for a regular morning temp of 96 degrees is 3 to 4 grams of Armour, a person with a regular morning temp of 97 should take 1 to 2. If you have side effects, talk to your doctor about reducing the dosage. Weigh the pros and cons to come to the best decision for you. Include in your diet molasses, egg yokes, parsley, apricots, dates and prunes. Eat fish or chicken and raw milk and cheeses. Eat these in moderation: brussels sprouts, peaches, pears, spinach, turnips, and cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, kale, and mustard greens. If your condition is sever, stop eating those foods entirely. They may further supress thyroid function. Avoid foods like white flour and sugar(over processed foods), drink steam-distilled water only(can be bought at wal-mart), do not take sulfa drugs or antihistamines unless specifically directed to do so by your doctor, avoid floride (including the kind found in tooth paste and tap water) and chlorine(also found in tap water). Chlorine and floride block iodine receptors in the thyroid gland, resulting in reduced iodine-containing hormone production and finally hypothyroidism.

By thyroid being borderline low,are you referring to TSH levels (thyroid stimulating hormone), or to T3 and T4 levels? Since TSH is usually the test run to screen for thyroid disease, then I would wait and see what the other test results are, specifically of T3, T4, and thyroid autoantibodies. If the results of any of those tests show decreased thyroid function, then I would definitely take synthroid. However, usually low TSH levels are indicative of overactivity of the thyroid, which should also be taken care of....

I hate to take any kind of medicines because they have to many side effects.I would rather try an alternative remedy like a special diet or vitamins anything to stay away from the meds.

take the synthroid medication. it's cheat and it works. As you get older, or more stress in your life it can get worse without treatment. Then you hair will thin out, you'll be cold and have dry skin and sleep problems. What the heck; go for the best. It's safe.

I would say try the alternatives before medicine but make sure you research the pros and cons of it all.

If that doesn't work then I would try the medicine.
