Ok, relax. Take a deep breath. It's not going to be so bad. Just take things one step at a time.

1. Determine what you know and what you don't know. Look at your lecture or class notes and in your textbook.

2. Find out what is most likely going to be on the exam. You don't want to waste time learning things that don't count. The only way to know is to ask around or look at your own notes. Most teachers give students a good idea about what is on their exam, but if you missed that class, ask your classmates. Sometimes teachers use past exams, modifying them just slightly. Previous exams can be very helpful.

3. Work out the problems if you have a math or science class. Memorizing formulas is useful, but it's nowhere near as useful as actually doing real homework problems. If you don't have a science or math class, you will most likely be dealing with memorization. Even if you're studying the night before the exam, if your exam has problems, you need to be able to work them out.

4.If your exam is largely memorization, then the only sure-fire way is to take some note cards and jot down notes, and memorize them. When I used to study for biology classes I would write down things like metabolic processes or photosyntesis and literally memorize them one-by-one. If you can develop a short-hand "heurstic" it would help you a lot. To give you an example: the taxonomic system of classifying organisms can be remembered best as "King Phillip Came Over From Greece SInging" which means Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. Or the order of colors ROY-G-BIV Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue -Indigo-Violet. You can always make up your own memorization short cuts.

5. Always go back to your notes to make sure you're covering what needs to be covered. You don't want to end up spending hours on a chapter that is barely covered while spending little time covering the most important chapter in the book. Keep in mind that in some cases teachers/professors will have questions on the exam which are not covered in the text book. Go back to your notes and ask friends if there are topics that were covered in class but not so much in the book.

Remember, studying for your exam is a methodical process, quite similar to preparing for a major battle. The invasion of Normandy may have been a stunning one-day event, but it took a lot of careful planning to carry out. EVen if you are pressed for time at the last hours before your exam, you need to keep your composure and approach the process attentively and methodically.

Good luck!

Don't wait for the test to start studying.

Start studying at the beginning of the semester and keep it up through the whole semester.

Study every subject every day.

Don't study what you already know. Skip the things you know and spend time studying what you have not learned yet.

Search the internet for "how to study" and you will find a lot of good resources.
