oh i love chihuahua's i have one. i'm 14 right now and we've had her for 11 years. they like to bark when ever strangers come but they are harmless to their owners they are very cuddly and protective even though they are so small. we've had her for most of my life and she is the sweetest dog i've ever met, chihuahua's act like a 1 year old child no matter how old they really are. (trust me i know). so get one you wont regret it.

You should not buy a "designer" breed under any circumstances unless you want to pay a LOT of money for a poorly bred animal that is often the product of people trying to make a buck. A responsible breeder doesn't turn a profit. I wont say yes or no specifically to a chihuahua because they are all individual animals. Proper training goes a really long way in eliminating any bad habits a dog may have (including biting) although biting is definitely something more prevalent when puppies are removed from the mother before 8 weeks. If you decide to get a chihuahua, make sure to look for a responsible breeder who has bred for several generations with good temperment as one of their key criteria (also make sure that health is absolutely the primary thing they are breeding for). If you just want a lovable small dog, consider checking petfinder.com to find a great dog in a shelter near you. You'd be doing something great for a dog, and your kids would totally love whichever pet you chose. Also, some of the unknowns are eliminated as far as health and temperment issues when you adopt a shelter dog. They won't adopt out a dog that is not fit for adoption in your home.

No. I have a chihuahua and I've dealt with the breed for years. My chihuahua loves everyone....even kids. The thing is, she's a fragile little thing. She's 6 years old and 3.5 lbs. She could not take the kid handling that would come along with living with one. I seen her snap at a 4 year old boy once....but....I also witnessed that same little boy pick her up by the neck and drop her to the ground on a prior day. It made her terrified of him. I would recommend a tougher small dog if you have kids. A pug would be your best bet if you're that concerned on a purebred....but like others have mentioned....a shelter dog needs you most. Also....please don't support the new "rare" breed breeders....chugs (chihuahua/pug)...schnoodles (schnauzer/poodle)...maltipoo (maltese/poodle)....thispoo....thatpoo....etc. They are not rare breeds worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. They are mixed breeds and unacceptable by AKC. They are bred by irresponsible breeders out to make a buck. They are usually CKC registered. CKC will register anything. They're pretty much a bogus registry out to make a buck off the bogus breeders out to make a buck. A true reputable breeder breeds true AKC recognised breeds....with one thing in mind. To better that breed. I can go on for hours on this topic....I'm a major advocate....but I'll stop here before I get myself in trouble. Get a pug.

I have breed chihuahuas for over 6 years and have never had a problem with the chi's and any owners. They have went to homes with children too. It has a lot to do with the way you handle your dog. Any dog can be snippy.
The main thing to remember is that you have to treat a new pup just like you would a new baby. They need proper handling, supervision and care. They need nap times, quiet times and good training.

Chihuahuas are not safe for children below ten years old. Toy Poodles, Dachshunds, or Malteses are great dogs.

Racism and the media is slightly of a shambles I have got to say. It's the present state of the arena that humans are so readily angry and sue humans left correct and centre for matters they do not like, so as to preserve themselves the clicking use a time period so vast that it encompasses the whole thing. It's a politically proper method of looking to please all people, which finally simply makes it seem like they do not have their data correct or do not honestly realize so much approximately the tale they're reporting. I'm with you, humans must be known as what they're. As a white Englishman it might be considered as racist while I say this, however I feel it must as transparent reduce case, as you are saying, name a spade a spade! If they're English, name them English, if they're from Pakistan name them a Pakistani, if they're from China, name them Chinese. If I needed to quite decide to this reply I might say that utilising the time period "Asian" so largely is actually as racist as you'll get considering it's generalising all people from that continent.

I would start by going to your local shelter and spending time with the dogs that catch your eye. All dogs, even pure breeds have different personalities. Keep looking until you find one that is suited to your and your families needs....the perfect dog for you is out there.....
