Now, you have to understand, I am neither a scientologist nor a supporter of same by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I'm always extremely disappointed in a celebrity when I find out they're a scientologist (you'd think people like Beck would know better). Even the word "scientology" bothers me. It's like some stupid person trying to say the word "science" and botching it horribly...the suffix "-ology" means "the study of," so, based off of that, scientology would be the study of...science? I dunno, it makes little sense to me. And the creation story and methods for becoming a higher-up are simply ridiculous. It sounds like science fiction. In fact, it IS science fiction, based on its creator's credentials.

But, as the actual question already implies, I am playing devil's advocate for just a moment, and a teacher of mine brought up a really good point: what if it turned out to be right?

Damn, you people are fast.

Some good answers so far! I'll get back to you with some responses when I can go through what I've gotten and make better note of who said what.

To Big.Dave- In regards to your first idea: well, isn't that kind of my point? We don't know what is right and what is wrong, and for all we know Scientology is just as likely as anything else. In regards to the pot-smoking: Can I join you? ^_^

To jxt299- No, I haven't. I did see the "Tom Cruise in the closet" one, though. That was hilarious.

To Quietwalker- Because L. Ron himself said it was all fiction.

To jbsoileau- Well, the fact that I came up with this question at all suggests that I have more than enough time to waste. God, I really need to get a job. -_-;;

To timjim- I actually thought about this too. I mean, some guy going around claiming to be the son of God? Sounds ridiculous, if you look at it objectively. But at least he was in the same ballpark as the religion's other followers...Scientology takes a completely different direction altogether.

To playfulduo69- Well, what I meant was if EVERYONE found out that it was right; like, at the apocalypse, or something.

Well, I guess if it turned out to be right, Tom Cruise, John Travolta and all the rest of them would be able to tell the world a big, fat "I told you so!"

We would be subjected to further smugness from Tom Cruise and the world would weep and wail and gnash their teeth

The religion was started by L. Ron Hubbard a science fiction writer. They don't worship a god per say. They believe each person has a god within them. And through large sums of money and study and giving up control of your own life to a certain extent. They can show you the way to bring that god out. To have the best life you can possibly have. It's a crock! But if it turned out to be true? Then I really didn't lose anything being a christian. Because I am still the best person I can be. And it didnt cost me as much! LOL....

Well, if it were right, why did it take so long for them to finally figure it out?

But you could pose the same question to an Atheist about Christianity...

If you follow the Christian Bible, you what? Live a healthier life, have something to believe in, and if it is true you go to heaven, if not...you lived a good life.

But this Scientology cult is an invented "religion". Reminds me of the Davidien Cult in Waco, TX.

Either that or they are all aliens preparing us for the colonization of our planet.

What have I lost if I've lived my life by Christ's standard?
Understanding you are playing devils advocate. Christ was one of the following 1. He was a liar 2. He was a lunatic. or 3. He was trully the Son of God.
As an illustration would either one of the 1st 2 be able to preach the sermon on the mount?

I understand what you're saying, but that's like "What if worshiping mayonase turned out to be totally right?"

Basically, if evil space aliens were crashed into earth's volcanoes to die or some crazy stuff like that, I think I would still be able to live out my life without too much change. I'd smoke a lot more weed though, that's for sure.

I'd be curious as to how L. Ron Hubbard obtained this knowledge. And I would wonder about Xenu (the religion's Satan-like figure). Wow. Good question.
