Due to budget and time restraints, my fiance and I were going to have a small family wedding and reception. My fiance has a HUGE family and I have a small family. We were originally going to limit the guests to parents and siblings and one or two close friends. He has SUDDENLY decided that he wants his aunts and uncles and cousins invited to the wedding, but we don't have the resources to invite them to the reception also. Should we invite them to the wedding but not the reception and maybe provide snacks and punch for them? What should we do. Looking for creative solutions to this problem.
Thank you

I think it's absolutely ok to invite people to the wedding and not the reception. An idea would be to provide champagne or sparkling wine after the ceremony with some desserts that maybe your family can get together and make to save costs. Make it something easy to pick up off a table and eat with a napkin instead of needing plates and forks. Or bake a bunch of cookies and wrap them in a pretty colored tulle (maybe wrap 3 together) tie them with a pretty ribbon and toast with milk. You can really get creative with this and find solutions that will help you save money. Most of all - don't stress - and enjoy your special day. Best wishes!

Maybe you should have the reception a couple hours later after the wedding. Then go somwere and eat with the people involved with your wedding. At the reception just have snacks, and finger food. Then you can invite whoever you want.

I would ask the family members either to bring a plate, or if you are having it a restaurant to buy their own meals do this for all the guest except for the immediate family like parents and siblings, failing that i had a backyard bbq for my wedding and it was the perfect stress free day!

This is a little more non-traditional, but what about doing a later ceremony (after dinner time) and have everyone come and do a "dessert reception." It would definitely cost less and you could even make the desserts; of course have your traditional wedding cake and make brownies, cookies, have fresh fruit, ice cream sundae bar. Something fun, inexpensive, and different! Good luck!

Maybe members of either side of the family could throw a "Congratulations" party instead of a reception. This could be done after the honeymoon. I've actually seen it done before and it's a lot less stress on you. If your families both provide, then it would be a lot of fun.

invite everyone. if you don't it will cause problems. you know you are on a budget, but no one will understand that. all i can suggest is that you try to find a banquet hall cheap, have it in a back yard, the forest preserve, etc. a friend of mine was in the same financial trouble and she opened a new credit card up with 0% financing for 1 year and started to pay it back as she opened her envelopes. yeah its tacky, some might say, but it may give you the help you're looking for. good luck!

my idea--invite both of your familes, no matter what size, to the church. then have the small reception that you want. if your hubby to be wants his family to be part of the reception but you dont have the resources, have like a post-wedding brunch..

Hire a wedding coordinator or wedding consultant. What you pay for their fee will save you time, money, and headaches. You can just sit back and enjoy your special day, let someone else handle the unforeseen problems.
