Cats can vocalize a number of sounds, and some even understand what we say well enough to attempt to "speak" English. I had a cat that could say "Mama" and "love you." I think it's possible that you did in fact hear the cat asking for help, and that your daughter heard the cat call her name.

Not so much in English, but they certainly can vocalize, and sometimes can get pretty close to a word. I almost do think that they try to mimic their humans sometimes. I had a cat that would say "out" (more or less) when he wanted out in the back yard. One of my kittens has made a very good mimc if "mama" a couple of times now (very clear, very freaky). They do have vocal "words" they will say to you in "cat", that do have meaning, but you have to figure it out in "cat". *LOL*

Cats have over 2,000 documented vocal sounds. They cannot speak "human" language but with the vocal range they have at times it might sound like they do.
