I'm 18 and I want to learn to drive. Do I still need a permit to legally drive or can my mom just teach me behind the wheel? Then, once comfortable behind the whell, can go take the actual liscence test with DMV?

Thanks for your responses.

You legally have to have your written test done before you can get behind the wheel of a vehicle. You wouldn't want to get stopped without it

I don't know what the exact regulations are where you live, but in most places, to operate a motor vehicle at all, you first require a Learner's permit, which allows you to operate the vehicle only while under the direct supervision of someone else with a valid full permit.

Even if you are 18, or 38 you still require the Learner's permit in order to practise driving. Some jurisdictions require you to have the Learner's permit for six months, and then graduated licenses after that (i.e. no night time driving, or other restrictions) before you can get a full permit. I'm not sure if there's age restrictions on the graduations.

If your region is anything like mine, the Learner's permit is amazingly easy to obtain. I think there's about 20 multiple choice questions of the "What does a red light mean?" variety, and then you're on your way. If you look around at how poorly people drive and realize that they all passed the test, you get an idea of how easy it is to pass the driver's exam.
