Come on! I know you think it's a sin and impure and for trash, they are obvious answers. I want to know why you think it's a sin or impure. Give me some reasons. Use some pragmatism.

Greg, thanks for your answer but I am not married, my wife died 16 years ago and I have not been with a woman since then, likewise I do not covet my neighbours wife. I just wanted to ask a question that might get the christians to think. While there have been many good responses so far, there have been many that simply use the bible as justification rather than give valid reasons for their opinions

How many men present this morning have a neighbour or a friend with a wife who is more intelligent than your wife? She's a woman who has common interests with you, interests that your wife finds boring. She's talented, a classy dresser who cares for her body and carries herself in a noble fashion. You ask yourself, "Why doesn't my wife sparkle like that chick?"
Friends, comparison is a deadly game. Don't do it! It leads to coveting, adultery and divorce. Coveting blinds you to your spouses positive character qualities. Coveting makes you despise your wife's humility, meekness and virtue. Coveting robs your spouse from the position of Top Dog in your life. She is no longer your most cherished possession, she is "The Wife." Coveting tears-up families like useless scrap paper. Don't do it!

Well you should ask yourself this question....what would happen if her husband found out ? What if it was your wife that was being coveted by someone else? Are you married ? If so, and your marriage is not working then you should try counselling. Barring that, end the relationship and start anew with someone else. Is this just sexual attraction, because then you are being immature and don't deserve to have anyone until you grow up and realize how lucky you are to have at least one woman who is willing to tolerate you. It sounds like you want to have your cake and eat it too, and that is just being selfish. Stop letting "Mr. Johnston" doing your thinking and take the time to consider what damage you will do just to satisfy your misplaced sexual desires.

The Judeo-Christian God doesn't use pragmatism. You shouldn't do it because it's a sin, and it's a sin because God said so. Yahweh was never overly fond of pragmatism or logic. As gods go, he isn't one of the brightest - it probably worried him that one of his creations could easily disprove his existence, so he condemned rationalism from the get-go.
If you want a pragmatic reason for not coveting thy neighbor's wife, nor his ass, nor his ox, nor his wife's ass, nor his ox's ass, look instead to the East. According to Buddhist teachings, it is desire for things you cannot have which binds you to materialism and ultimately prevents lasting happiness. Just as American Consumerism is fundamentally hopeless - you will NEVER have "enough" stuff - so coveting unattainable asses will only lead to disappointment. If you should actually acquire your neighbor's wife, it will bring grief to your neighbor; besides, the b*tch probably isn't that trustworthy anyhow, to run out on her husband like that. And then you'll be back to coveting something else, like your ox's ass.
If you'd just quit coveting stuff and learn to appreciate what you have, then satisfaction can be achieved. For example, you can appreciate your own wife, or your own ass. You can appreciate your neighbor's wife as the beautiful creature she undoubtedly is, and be happy for your neighbor to be so blessed.
Why such logic is not included in Christian dogma is beyond me, but apparently the "Thou Shalt Do As Thou Art Told" thing is still working for them.

Maybe your neighbor has anger issues and will come over and hurt you for coveting his wife. Or maybe hs wife likes being coveted and she comes over and covets you too and she finds out that she coveted a little carelessly and you can also covet your love child that she will lie about and say is her husbands child and then you are like John Redcorn on King of the Hill.

Coveting anything is unhealthy for you.
Coveting is wanting to take what is not yours.
Therefore coveting your neighbor's goods will make you unhappy and angry.
Coveting your neighbor's wife makes these bad feelings worse by adding lust.
These negative emotions cannot help you be a healthy happy and holy person in any way.
With love in Christ.

The Ten Commandments teach that sins of coveting will lead to greater sins, such as adultery or murder. But, hey, I'm not even a Christian. I'm just secular.

she is married when you are married you and your partner becomes one flesh. They are to love one another until they are parted by death. It's cheating it's sinful it's wrong. Moral and spiritually it's WRONG. Oh and when the husband and wife becomes one flesh when they are married as they are. Just think of it this way. You covet your neighbors wife you are also convetting her husband. And that is just plain sick.

It's what is in your heart is what matters to god, according to the Bible. Lusting after her is like having sex with her. That's breaking the 7th commandment. and then you would cheat on your wife.
And God wants you to be content with what you have. That's why you can't lust after her. Because you need to be content with what God gives you. That's why coveting is a sin.
