There is nothing wrong with giving the mattress to your in-laws. However, I would suggest that you don't just take it over there when you go. Call them first and say you bought a new bed and would like to find a good home for your old mattress. Ask them if they would like to have it or say that you would like to give them "first chance" at it before giving it to someone else. Since you sleep on it sometimes, they may appreciate the new mattress. They probably don't know how bad the guest bedroom mattress is since they don't sleep there. Don't have a sarcastic attitude about the bed at your in-laws, it may put everyone in a defensive mood, especially your wife, and you don't want to put her in a tough spot between you and her sister.

Just be careful how you approach it. Call them casually this week and just mention that you've bought a new bed and have a two-year old pillow-top mattress in good shape and were just thinking that they might be able to use it. If they say no, then don't bring it, because then it would seem rude. But if they mention that they'd like the mattress, bring it with you (just don't be surprised if it ends up going on their bed, and their ten-year old mattress gets put in the guest room.
You could always bring an air mattress and sleep on the floor. Remember, it's only for a weekend, and a sore back might be worth it if the alternative is hurting her sister's feelings.

Call up your in-laws and tell them that you bought a new mattress.Tell them that your older mattress is only two years old and in very good condition and ask them if they would like to have it. It is not rude to offer the mattress to them;it would be rude just to show up with a mattress without telling them first.

I'd think the inlaws would appreciate it. But maybe you could tell them that you just thought they might want it since it's only a couple of year old, not that their mattress is awful.

I really dont see anything wrong with it. This is a nice gift! I'm sure your sister-in-law knows that her guest bed isn't that great; that's why its the Guest Bed and not the Master Bed. Unless she's a very sensitive person, I say go ahead, bring it.

I think it can be done tactfully, besides if ya'll are close enough to spend the week-end at each others house then surely the sisters are close enough to pass on out-grown, or no longer used articles with honesty.
