It can be just periodic fluid retention from too much sodium. It could indicate some degree of heart failure, or could have to do with pregnancy. Have this person check with the doc, as the underlying cause may need immediate attention. Also the fluid retention may be in other areas also, such as around the heart and lungs, and could cause significant problems.

Swelling, also known as edema, can be caused by many things. Some are benign, such as typical edema seen with too much salt consumption or during PMS/periods, to serious conditions such as heart disease or nephrotic syndrome (a symptom of severe kidney disease). If you also suffer swelling in other parts of the body including eyes and mouth, could be angioedema which is a form of deep tissue hiving. Or if it mainly involving the joints, could be a sign of rheumatoid or osteo arthritis.... Consult a doctor!

Could be any number of things. You should call your Dr. with all of your symptoms and see what they think.
