just ask him his plans for the summer, don't do it by running up to him and being a dorkwad and stuff just casually like if you're asking everyone you know the same thing, whatever his answer just be like wow that sounds interesting, ask more questions etc like you're really interested in whatever he'll be doing then be like can i have your no. because maybe i can invite myself to go along with you the next time you do whatever it is he plans on doing.
p.s. if he's going on a trip this won't work so just show an interest in whatever place he's going to and be like, yeah i'm going to whatever place, let's exchange email addresses so we can send each other photos of our cool trips. just anything like that but especially if you don't know if he likes you back just be casual and laid back about finding out more stuff about him, once you have his confidence then is the time to make your move.
